The FRIENDS OF KANT AND KÖNIGSBERG are pleased to announce their next virtual Table Talk (via Zoom)

on 16 October 2023 at 7:30 p.m. CET

with The Rt Hon Sir Konrad Schiemann about his memoir

A Dual Perspective: The German in an English Judge.

In 2013 Sir Konrad joined us to celebrate Immanuel Kant’s birthday in Kant’s home town, which used to be Königsberg in East Prussia and is now Kaliningrad in Russia. He gave a talk (in his German mother-tongue) on his great-great grandfather Eduard von Simson born in Königsberg, who presided over five German parliaments and the first German Supreme Court (https://www.freunde-kants.com/schiemann). Now, ten years later, Sir Konrad will give us the pleasure to talk about his recently published memoir of an extraordinary family which has been involved in the construction of Europe since the first half of the nineteenth century and was faced with all the challenges posed by the Third Reich. Konrad, born of German parents in 1937, spent the war in Berlin being bombed by the British. Orphaned at the age of eight he moved to England in 1946 and started, in his words, aping the manners of an English gentleman. He became a High Court Judge and a Lord Justice in the Court of Appeal and finished his career as the British Judge of the European Court of Justice. After having his family and life in Germany torn apart by conflict he forged a career around his desire to help in the construction of a peaceful Europe – an objective far more distant now than it appeared to be only a few years ago.

Please find attached a list of chapter heading to give you an idea of the ground covered in Konrad Schiemann’s memoir.

We’ll conclude our virtual Table Talk with news from Immanuel Kant‘s home town.

Please register by sending an e-mail to Marianne Motherby (motherby@web.de) by 12 October 2023 so as to join us on 16 October at 7:30 p.m. CET. You will receive the Zoom link in due course prior to the event.
